Grill Safety This Summer With These Tips

The grilling season is nigh upon us. Though, if you are one of the dedicated few, grilling season never truly ends. However, if you are like most of us who packed up our grill for the season, it’s nearly time to dust it off, invite a few friends over, and kick back and enjoy the fruits of spring. Yet, before you do that, it never hurts to go over a few safety tips to ensure that your grilling experience is devoid of any avoidable calamities. With that, here are several grilling safety tips for you to peruse.

Grill Placement

Ok. Let’s throw out the most obvious tip first: Only use your grill outside. If you live in an apartment without a decently-sized backyard, then you need to find a nice park to grill. Never grill within your house or under a covered balcony. Propane, gas, and charcoal grills are designed to be used outdoors where there is plenty of ventilation. If there are combustible materials nearby, then well, something is bound to catch fire. Don’t say that we didn’t warn you.

The second tip is to place your grill away from your house. You need to keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home or any other structure. Also, ensure that your grill is located on a flat surface. This seems like common sense, but people have set their grills down on slopes, which is why people need to continuously be warned.

Grill Use

You need to also check your grill for leaks, especially if it has been out of commission throughout the winter. Check your gas lines to ensure that they are free of leaks before you fire up the grill. Also, always open the lid before lighting. When the grill is in use, never leave it unattended. You might think it’s safe to walk away, but you never know what might happen. Always have someone watching it.

Another handy tip is to have a fire extinguisher close by in case something unforeseen happens. Once you are done grilling, be sure to always clean your grill. Grease will build up over time and act as fuel and catch fire. Use a grill brush after each use and empty the grease tray when it begins to build up.
