If you’re planning to pack up the whole family for a long trip this summer, you should check out this list of tips and tricks for stress-free traveling with little ones.
Food and Hydration on Road Trips
Pack a lot of snacks. Then pack some more. People tend to eat more when they’re bored. Sitting in a car for eight to twelve hours will easily work up a boredom appetite. You should give your kids a variety of snacks to choose from. Pack a cooler full of sandwiches, cheeses, veggies, and fruit. In addition to packing enough snacks for your trip, make sure each of your children has a reusable water bottle. Instead of handing them juice boxes or water bottles that they’re likely to spill, you can refill their sealable water bottle and reduce the chances of making a mess.
Keep Kids Entertained on Long Trips
Before you leave for your trip, help your kids pick out a few games, toys, and coloring books so they have something to keep them entertained. If your kids really like coloring, it might be a good idea to pack a clipboard as well so that they have a hard surface to work with. You can also pack a few games for the whole family or teach them a new game while you’re on the road. I Spy is an easy one to learn. When they’re tired of their physical games and activities, they can switch to digital entertainment like watching shows or movies on a tablet. If your vehicle doesn’t have a Wi-Fi hotspot, remember to download a few of their favorites before you leave.
Plan Your Stops
If you’re tempted to drive non-stop and only pause for restroom breaks, resist the urge unless you’re on a deadline. Eight hours in a car is a long time for children. So, if you can break the drive up into smaller sprints, they’re less likely to get fussy. Plan your stops so that they have an opportunity to get out, stretch, use the restroom, and if possible, explore something cool along your route.
