Protect Your Paint Job With These Tips

Maintaining the paint on your car not only makes it more beautiful while you own it, but it can also help your resale value when you decide it’s time to move on to a new car. Take care of your car’s paint with these tips!

Regular Washes

If you use your car every day of the workweek, ideally you should be washing and drying your car once a week. However, that is likely not an attainable goal for most people, so aim to wash your car a couple of times a month. Washing your car regularly helps reduce damage from dirt, grime, and UV rays. If you don’t have time to hand-wash your car, you can always breeze through the car wash.

Use Wax

Not only does wax keep the exterior of the car shiny and polished, but it also plays a major part in protecting the paint on your car. Wax creates a barrier between general dirt and grime, bird droppings, splattered bugs, and other debris that can harm the paint. There are many ways to get wax onto your car from applying it by hand to choosing it as an add-on to your car washes.

Use Paint Sealant

Paint sealant is even better and more effective than wax, and they can be used together. When applied correctly, it can last up to six months. However, the sealant does require quite a bit of prep work and care when you’re putting it on. Even when it’s applied correctly, sealant can highlight any imperfections such as scratches and swirls. For an ever longer-lasting option, you can use a synthetic sealant. Synthetic sealants can last up to a few years, but they require even more research and care. If you’re serious about a synthetic sealant, your best option might be to have it professionally applied.

Covered Parking

If you have a garage or a carport, use it! Covered parking is the ideal situation for your car because it drastically reduces the opportunity for debris, bird droppings, sap, or other dirt to land on your car. If the garage is filled with boxes, sporting equipment, or other clutter, take a weekend to clear it out and give your car a dedicated home. If parking under a shelter isn’t an option, invest in a high-quality car cover.
