Ingredients for Cake Ball Flag Cake

You’ll need to make a shopping list and grab your ingredients before making the cake. The recipe requires:

  • One box of moist cake mix and the listed ingredients
  • One container of whipped vanilla frosting
  • 14 ounces of red candy melts
  • 14 ounces of white candy melts
  • 1 cup of blue candy melts

You can also get some items to decorate the cake if you wish. Consider using white sparkling sugar, blue sugar crystals, and red sugar crystals for the cake.

Making the Cake Balls

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and take out a 13 x 9-inch pan. Follow the instructions on the cake box to make the cake. When it finishes baking, take it out of the oven and let it cool for an hour.

Prepare a cookie sheet by lining it with wax paper. Then take out a large bowl and crumble the cake into it. Add the container of vanilla frosting into the bowl and mix it up. Then use an ice cream scooper to scoop out the mixture. Shape it, so it forms a ball and put it on the cookie sheet. Continue doing this until you have 63 cake balls.

Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for 45 minutes. Make sure the cake balls are firm, and if they are, move the pan to the refrigerator.

Then put the red candy melts into a one-quart microwavable bowl. Put it in the microwave for one minute and 30 seconds. Open the microwave and stir the mixture. Turn it on for 15 seconds and then mix it once it’s done. Continue to do that until it has a smooth consistency.

Then remove two cake balls from the refrigerator. Use two forks to hold the first cake ball and dip it into the melted candy. Coat the cake ball and sprinkle the red sugar crystals on it, if you have any. Continue this process until you’ve dipped 28 cake balls.

Do the same with the white candy melts. This time, you will want to coat 23 cake balls into the melted candy. Then prepare the blue candy melts. Dip 12 cake balls into the blue melted candy.
