About The Knoxville Museum Of Art
The Knoxville Museum of Art first opened in 1961 in the Dunlin House, an elegant 1915 architectural masterpiece in a neighborhood in West Knoxville. By the early 1980s, it was clear that the museum needed a bigger space, so funds were raised to purchase land on the site of the 1982 World’s Fair. The expanded Knoxville museum opened in 1990 with the new space spanning over 53,000 square feet and four stories.
Current Exhibits
Throughout the four floors of the museum, you’ll find several permanent exhibits alongside a constantly rotating cast of seasonal exhibits. Among the permanent showcases you’ll find Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee; Thorne Rooms, a collection of miniature Victorian parlors and other household rooms; Currents: Recent Art from East Tennessee and Beyond; Facets of Modern and Contemporary Glass; and Cycle of Life: Within the Power of Dreams and the Wonder of Infinity. These exhibits are permanent collections in the museum, so you’ll be able to explore them time and time again as you visit throughout the year.
