Easy Ways to Keep Your Car Cool in the Heat

We’re in the dog days of August now, and it can be hard to find relief from the lingering summer heat. Those sweltering summer temperatures don’t have to follow you into the car, though, so try these heat-fighting tricks to keep your car cool through the end of summer.

Search for Shade

It might seem like a given, but you can notice a real difference in your cabin’s temperature if you simply park out of the direct sunlight. A thoroughly covered area like a parking deck or garage would be ideal, but those won’t always be an option while you’re out and about. When you have to park out in the open, look for the shade of large trees or even buildings. Keep in mind that their shadows will shift as the day goes on, and your shady spot might move away entirely if you’re parked for a long time.

Keep the Sun Out

There will be occasions where there doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city, so it pays to bring some heat shielding with you. A convenient, foldable sunshade in your windshield can block sunlight from pouring directly into your cabin, which can make a notable difference on hot days. You can also look for sunshades that fit your passenger and rear windows for more coverage.

Cover Hot Surfaces

It can be hard to get going when you can barely hold on to the steering wheel. Surfaces like the steering wheel, arm rests, and even the seats can become uncomfortably hot when the sun’s rays beat directly onto them, so consider covering them while you’re out. Keep some towels in your cabin to cover these surfaces when you’re parking out in the sun to make getting back in much easier.
